Northern And Southern Tanzania Safaris

In the North, you will need about 8 days to visit all the parks, since there are 5 of them and they’re relatively close to each other. In the South, you’ll ideally go for 8-12 days, as there are 8 national parks in total that you can visit and they’re more spread out than the Northern Circuit parks.

Why go on a Southern Tanzania Safari?

A Southern Tanzania Safari is very highly regarded by safari enthusiasts for a number of reasons. Firstly the game viewing – these areas offer a good variety and density of game, an interesting crossover of eastern and southern Africa species, and plenty of predator action. In addition, open-sided safari vehicles enhance the viewing experience, in contrast to the closed-sided vehicles used in the north.

Secondly, the huge parks and reserves offer visitors an uncrowded and more exclusive game viewing experience with few other vehicles and tourists (the contrast with the more crowded northern parks is stark), and a good sense of the vastness of the African wilderness.  Finally, the south and west of Tanzania offer a wider range of activities than are available in the tightly-regulated  national parks of the north – as well as the usual daytime game drives, there are walking safaris, boating safaris, fly camping and even mountain trekking to find wild chimpanzees!

The south and west of Tanzania are often overshadowed by the more famous and iconic Serengeti Ngorongoro Crater in the north.  Some agents feel that the south and west are better suited to the seasoned safari-goer and don’t recommend them for a first timer  –  however we would disagree! We have sent thousands of first timers to southern Tanzania where they have had an excellent safari experience.

Southern Tanzania is particularly handy if you are looking to combine safari and beach.

Southern Circuit Safari Itinerary

Adventure in Mikumi National Park

The Southern Tanzania Safari Circuit includes Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Mahale National Park, Katavi National Park, Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve.

Day 1: Dar es salaam to mikumi national park – tanzania

Jambo and welcome to East Africa! This morning start your journey in port city of Dar es Salaam where this Tanzania Private Safari begins. Departing from Dar es Salaam and drive to Mikumi National Park on Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit.

The landscape of Mikumi is often compared to that of the Serengeti. The road that crosses the park divides it into two areas with partially distinct environments. The area north-west is characterized by the alluvial plain of the river basin Mkata. The vegetation of this area consists of savannah dotted with acaciabaobabtamarinds, and some rare palm. In this area, at the furthest from the road, there are spectacular rock formations of the mountains Rubeho and Uluguru. The southeast part of the park is less rich in wildlife, and not very accessible

Mahale National Park Enjoy fantastic sunsets over Lake Tanganyika, containsat least world’s largest protected population (approx. 700-1000) of eastern Chimpanzee

Katavi National Park Contains massive herds of buffaloes and numerous elephants, and hosts robust population of lions, painted wolves, cheetahs & hynas.

View of a lifetime. Don’t miss

day 2 Mikumi national park

Day two set off into the unspoiled bush in search of wild animals and birds. The whole day is dedicated to 4×4 game drives in Mikumi National Park.

Mikumi National Park encompasses about 3 230 km² (1 247 mi²) of the Morogoro Region, forming part of the broader Selous Ecosystem. Game drives are usually conducted on the open grasslands of the Mkata Plains which attract a variety of grazers and predators. The grasslands of Mikumi resemble the open savannahs of the Serengeti Plains dotted with acacias and baobab trees.

Wildlife safari in Mikumi, you are likely to spot elephants, buffalos, wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, and an assortment of antelopes roaming around. Predators found here include wild dogs, lions, jackals, hyenas, and even leopards. We may also see giraffes, hippos, baboons, and vervet monkeys. Mikumi is also one of Tanzania’s important birding areas, with over 400 species recorded here. Species include Boehm’s bee-eater, lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, Dickinson’s kestrel, straw-tailed whydah, Bateleur eagle, superb starling, and African fish eagle.

day 3-5: Ruaha national park

On day three leave Mikumi and travel west to Ruaha National Park. The drive takes around five hours and covers about 320 km (200 mi).

The next few days are set aside for exploring the spectacular landscapes of Ruaha National Park in search of wildlife and birds. Due to its isolated location, Ruaha is a less-explored and often overlooked geme with a truly wild and undisturbed feeling. This is Tanzania’s largest national park, covering about 20 226 km² (7,809 mi²) of grassy plains and gentle hills sprinkled with acacia and baobab trees. Here, in this remote Tanzanian wilderness area, we escape the bustle and noise of modern life, tuning into the rhythms of the unspoiled African bush.

Ruaha is a predator hotspot, hosting one of the world’s largest lion populations and one of the few sizeable populations of cheetahs in East Africa. The national park is also home to one of Africa’s largest populations of endangered African wild dogs, numerous leopards, and hyenas. In addition to impressive carnivore sightings, we are sure to see elephants on our 4×4 game drives in Ruaha, which hosts over 10000 African elephants. We are also likely to see Cape buffalos as Ruaha hosts large herds of this member of the Big Five, along with plenty of giraffes, zebras, hippos, impalas, and other antelopes. Ruaha is situated where eastern and southern vegetation zones meet, resulting in an unusually high diversity of plant and animal species, including rare antelope species. Both greater and lesser kudu are found here, as well as sable and roan antelopes, along with more common species such as bushbuck, eland, and Grant’s gazelle.

day 8-10: ruaha national park to morogoro

The Uluguru mountains are a mountain range in eastern Tanzania, named after the Luguru tribe. The main portion of the Uluguru mountains is a ridge running roughly north-south and rising to 2,630 metres (8,600 ft) altitude at its highest point. On the main Uluguru range, 50 villages touch the forest boundary and over 151,000 people are found within the mountain area, often at increasing densities at higher altitudes up to the forest boundary.

Experience the most out of Zanzibar Beaches

day 12-13 zanzibar

Zanzibar means “land of the blacks”.

The people of Zanzibar are of diverse ethnic origins. The first permanent residents of Zanzibar seem to have been the ancestors of the Bantu Hadimu and Tumbatu, who began arriving from the African Great Lakes mainland around AD 1000. They belonged to various mainland ethnic groups and on Zanzibar, generally lived in small villages. They did not coalesce to form larger political units.

During Zanzibar’s brief period of independence in the early 1960s, the major political cleavage was between the Shirazi (Zanzibar Africans), who made up approximately 56% of the population, and the Zanzibar Arabs—the bulk of whom arrived from Oman in the 1800s—made up approximately 17%.[52][53] Today, Zanzibar is inhabited mostly by ethnic Swahili.[46] There are also a number of Arabs, as well as some ethnic PersianSomalis, and Indian people.

Features found in Zanzibar are Zanzibar Red Colobus, Mangrove Swamps, Jozani Forest, Zanzibar Leopard, Zanzibar servaline genet, African palm civets.
