Northern And Southern Tanzania Safaris

In the North, you will need about 8 days to visit all the parks, since there are 5 of them and they’re relatively close to each other. In the South, you’ll ideally go for 8-12 days, as there are 8 national parks in total that you can visit and they’re more spread out than the Northern Circuit parks.

A Western Tanzania Safari

In the West, you’ll likely spend 12-14 days  on a Tanzania safari. This is because specialised safaris like tracking chimpanzees in Gombe and Mahale might take more than a day. Plus, the nature there is out of this world, so you might want to enjoy it whilst you are there. As those six national park are in some of the most remote and exclusive locations in East Africa, this type of Tanzania safari will probably be an only once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you.

Northern Circuit Parks

The most notable national parks in the Northern Circuit are Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Northern parks are by far the most popular due to Serengeti’s fame and the Wildebeest Migration that takes place there.

These northern parks are also popular in terms of logistics – these parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro CraterTarangire and Lake Manyara) are very easily accessed from Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airports. The whole journey from those airports to each park might be about 2-3 hours in total.

Day 1-2: mahale national park

Arriving at Kigoma Airport and taking a 3 hours drive to Mahale National Park.

Mahale Mountains National Park lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in Uvinza District of Kigoma RegionTanzania. Named after the Mahale Mountains range that is within its borders, the park has several unusual characteristics. First, it is one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in the country. (The other is nearby Gombe Stream National Park made famous by the researcher Jane Goodall.) Mahale Mountains National Park harbours the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees and due to its size and remoteness, the chimpanzees flourish. It also a place where chimpanzees and lions co-exist. Another unusual feature of the park is that it is one of the very few in Africa that must be experienced by foot. There are no roads or other infrastructure within the park boundaries, and the only way in and out of the park is via boat on the lake.

The Mahale mountains were traditionally inhabited by the Batongwe and Holoholo peoples, with populations in 1987 of 22,000 and 12,500 respectively. When the Mahale Mountains Wildlife Research Center was established in 1979, the people were forcefully evicted from the mountains to make way for the park, which opened in 1985 despite the people had been highly attuned to the natural environment, living with virtually no impact on the ecology.

Also visit Lake Tanganyika, Lake Rukwa, Ugalla River Game Reserve, Rukwa Game Reserve and Lugwati Game Reserve.

day 3-4: katavi national park

The park encompasses the Katuma River and the seasonal Lake Katavi and Lake Chada floodplains.

Wildlife features include large animal herds, particularly of Cape Buffaloeszebrasgiraffes, and elephants, plus along the Katuma river, crocodiles and hippopotami which upon annual dry seasons results in mudholes that can be packed with hundreds of hippos.[3] Carnivorous animals that roam this park are cheetahswild dogshyenasleopards, and lions. Some sources claim a very high biodiversity in the park, although there are also reports of wildlife decline due to illegal hunting and poaching, presumably ‘bushmeat’ sustenance.[4] Katavi has fewer human visitors and jeeps conducting game drives than other Tanzania parks.

day 5-7 rungwa game reserve

Rungwa Game Reserve is considered a Lion Conservation Unit.[2]

The reserve is composed of hills mixed with patches of forest along the streams and the Mpera River valley, which provides water in the dry season and becomes the best game viewing areas from July to November. It covers a large part of Central and West Tanzania and primarily covered with miombo woodlands giving access to excellent thicket is a unique vegetation type found only in two places in Africa. The predominant wildlife species in Rungwa Game Reserve are: lion, leopard, African buffalo, eland, sable, greater kudu, grysbok, klipspringer, oribi, hartebeest, liechtenstein, impala, zebra, hippopotamus, crocodile and bush pig.
